CWN Editor's Note: Pope Francis has named Father Jozef Jonáš Maxim, the superior of a monastery in Ukraine, as archbishop of Prešov (Slovakia) and thus the leading prelate in the Slovak Greek Catholic Church, an Eastern Catholic church in full communion with the Holy See.

Born in Slovakia in 1974 and ordained to the priesthood in 1998, Father Maxim entered an Eastern Catholic monastery in Lviv (Ukraine) in 2004. He was elected the monastery’s igumen (abbot) in 2020.

Father Maxim succeeds Archbishop Ján Babjak, SJ, who resigned in 2022 at the age of 68.
