Indian bishop apologizes for adopting young woman

October 21, 2008

Bishop John Thattumkal, a Latin Rite bishop in the Indian Catholic stronghold of Kerala, apologized to priests of his diocese for adopting a 26-year-old woman to whose visions he has attributed the discovery of financial irregularities in his diocese. Bishop John Thattumkal reportedly expressed a willingness to withdraw the adoption deed, although he observed that no Church law prohibited the adoption. He also apologized for concelebrating Mass with a Syrian Orthodox priest.
