Bishop Aquila rips Catholic Health Association

April 01, 2010

Saying that supporters of recently enacted health care legislation “have ignored the basic principles for a just society and contributed to the precipitous march of society towards a culture of death,” Bishop Samuel Aquila of Fargo blasted the Catholic Health Association and other Catholic proponents of the legislation in a March 30 statement. “We now face the reality of severe damage to the common good by the expansion of abortion throughout our land because of the counter-witness of these groups.”

The action by the CHA to support Obamacare should surprise no one, least of all the Bishops. The CHA's journal, "Hospital Progress" has been espousing lefty politics for years. It's always the case that if a left wing Catholic group finds a conflict between pro-life principals & their left wing agenda the pro-life principals are thrown under the bus. Look at the case of the Cath Campaign for Human Development. Until the Bishops stop equating "social justice" with liberalism, this will go on.

Bishop Aquila is right as far as he goes, but neither he nor the other bishops have addressed the futility of this legislation for helping the poor or its egregious extension of government into the lives of all citizens. If the bishops want better healthcare for the poor, they should explain why Medicaid does not provide it but this "reform" will. If the bishops don't think that this "healthcare reform" is overreaching, why is the bill 2700 pages long and why do we need 16,500 more IRS agents?

Looks like Bishop Aquila is taking after his namesake (and mine): the prophet Samuel. He's speaking truth to power in the real sense, not the 60s sense of the phrase. God bless him!
