Cardinal Re, spokesman deny Vatican sent dossier that led to Italian editor’s ouster
February 04, 2010
Five months after Dino Boffo, the editor of the Italian bishops’ newspaper, resigned following a press report that he was a “renowned homosexual,” the editor of the newspaper in which the report appeared said that “a very authoritative and institutional source at the Holy See” had sent him false documents on Boffo’s alleged homosexuality.
“I can categorically deny these claims, which are designed to create confusion and false rumors,” said Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi. Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, prefect of the Congregation for Bishops, said that the claims made by Il Giornale editor Vittorio Feltri are “unthinkable.”
