Franciscans plead for peace in Syria

October 05, 2016

The minister general of the Franciscan order and the Franciscan superior of the Holy Land have called upon belligerents in Syria to lay down their arms.

“We appeal to all forces involved, and to all those who hold political responsibility, to put the good of the defenseless population of Syria, and the city of Aleppo, above and before anything else,” Brother Michael Perry and Brother Francesco Patton said in their joint appeal. “We call on you to immediately silence your weapons; to put an end to hatred and every kind of violence, so that all may find and walk the path of peace, reconciliation and forgiveness.”

The two also urged the international community to designate the city of Aleppo as a safe zone and place it under the control of United Nations peacekeeping forces.
