Papal visit to India likely for 2017; Colombia trip doubtful
October 04, 2016
Pope Francis is likely to visit India next year, he told reporters on October 2.
During a press conference on his flight home from Azerbaijan, the Pope said that a trip to India and Bangladesh is “quasi-certain” for 2017. This would be the 4th papal visit to India, and the first since St. John Paul II traveled there in 1999.
Regarding another possible trip, Pope Francis said that he would travel to Colombia “when the peace process is complete.” Last week, Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos confidently announced that the Pontiff would visit next year, since the government had reached a peace agreement with FARC rebels. But a weekend referendum, in which the people of Colombia rejected the accord, appears to make the papal visit far less likely.
