Myanmar plans demolition of Buddhist monasteries

August 10, 2016

The government of Myanmar has announced plans to destroy all houses of worship that have been built without government approval.

"Every religion in Myanmar has to follow rules and regulations," said U Myint Win Zaq, the minister of culture and religion. "If there are religious buildings that were built without permission, we will remove them."

The government's plan is aimed primarily at Buddhist institutions. More than 250 Buddhist monasteries could be razed.
