Chaldean Catholic Patriarch warns against forming Christian militia

March 08, 2016

Chaldean Catholic Patriarch Louis Raphael I Sako has warned against the formation of Christian militia groups to defend their communities in Iraq, the Fides news service reports.

The Chaldean prelate said that history shows the folly of Christian groups that took up arms and "fought the fights of others." He argued that militia groups based on religious affiliations are in fact "sponsored and supported by the same powers which started the conflict."

The Patriarch said that it would be more prudent for Christians to enlist in the regular armed forces of Iraq, or of autonomous Kurdistan, and "collaborate with them to free our occupied land."
