Vatican opens weekly haircuts-for-homeless service

February 17, 2015

Homeless people lined up for free haircuts and shaves at the Vatican on February 17, as a program begun by Pope Francis was inaugurated.

Each Monday, volunteer barbers will provide haircuts. (Monday was chosen because in Italy, barber shops are traditionally closed on that day.) The service follows up on another initiative, providing showers for the homeless. The new shower stalls are open each day, although they will be closed on Wednesdays when St. Peter’s Square is crowded with people attending the Pope’s weekly public audience.
