Ukrainian bishop calls for prayer, fasting: ‘the Titanic is sinking’

September 05, 2014

A Latin-rite bishop who ministers in eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian separatists are active, said that local Catholics are angry at the apparent indifference of Christians in other areas of the country.

“It's as if the Titanic is sinking [and] people in the neighborhood play music and have fun,” said Auxiliary Bishop Jan Sobil of Kharkiv-Zaporizhia. The prelate called upon Catholics throughout the nation to turn aside from normal entertainment and instead fast and pray.

“In the occupied cities churches are open, but the Masses are not held due to danger,” the Religious Information Service for Ukraine reported. “In cities under the control of military mercenaries, currently there are no priests. They are visiting the parishes where there is an opportunity to celebrate Mass.”
