Catholic Recipe: Christmas Punch

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 sliced pineapple
  • 1 bottle claret
  • 1 bottle red wine
  • 1/2 bottle rum
  • juice of 4 lemons
  • juice of 4 oranges
  • 1 pint water
  • 1 pound sugar
  • grated rind of 1 lemon
  • grated rind of 1 orange
  • 4 whole oranges cut in pieces
  • 1 stick cinnamon, broken up
  • 1 vanilla bean
  • 1/2 cup maraschino cherries

This famous Christmas punch is delicious with the Christmas Stollen. This is the Trapp family's punch.

DIRECTIONS

Boil spices thoroughly with the water. Remove them and pour the water into large earthenware pot. Add lemon and orange and rind, as well as pineapple and sugar (fruit and sugar prepared in a separate dish). Then add wine and rum, cover and heat. Add champagne before serving.
