A preview of Thursday's news

By Phil Lawler ( bio - articles - email ) | Jul 29, 2003

This much we know: On Thursday the Vatican will release its document arguing against legal recognition of homosexual unions.

This much we can safely predict: Prominent Catholic politicians will immediately reject the Vatican's arguments. (In fact Sen. John Kerry has already announced that he doesn't plan to pay attention to Church teaching.)

Coincidentally, in Boston the Thursday newspapers will doubtless carry front-page photos from the installation of Archbishop O'Malley. Those pictures will show-- seated in the front pews, held up to all the world as pillars of the Catholic community-- a collection of those same prominent Catholic politicians who will be rejecting the Vatican statement.

To be sure, there will be many other Catholics around Boston who welcome the Vatican document. But they won't be seated in the front rows at the archbishop's installation-- if they're invited to the ceremony at all.
