ARCHDEACON

An official who formerly administered part of diocese, in virtue of jurisdiction delegated to him by his bishop. Today similar duties are performed by auxiliary bishops, vicar-generals and others. In the Anglican Church the assistants to the bishops are still called archdeacons.
