BASILIANS

A general name for various religious institutes. Orthodox monks are sometimes called Basilians because they have inherited the spirit of St. Basil (329-79), although they have no uniform rule. There are five Catholic Basilian orders of men and four congregations of women, all of pontifical status. A congregation of the Priests of St. Basil was founded in 1822 at Annonay in France for educational and parochial work.
