Massachusetts priest sues other priests for starting rumor

November 02, 2010

A Massachusetts priest has filed a defamation suit against two other priests of his diocese, including the vicar general.

Father John Harrington, a priest of the Fall River diocese, named two pastors in the town of Falmouth—Msgr. John Perry, the vicar general, and Father William Costello—as defendants in his suit. Father Harrington, who had served in Falmouth, charges that the other two priests spread a baseless rumor about his private conduct. He filed a civil lawsuit after failing in months of efforts to persuade diocesan officials to defend his reputation.
