Pontiff appeals for safe transport of grain through Black Sea
October 12, 2026
Pope Leo XIV appealed to Russia and Ukraine to permit the passage of grain through the Black Sea.
“The war in tormented Ukraine continues to cause suffering far beyond its borders, especially in the poorest countries, where so many people depend on grain imports,” Pope Leo said at the conclusion of his October 11 Angelus address. “I make a heartfelt appeal to the parties to the conflict to allow for the safe transport of grain through the Black Sea. The daily bread of millions of people cannot be held hostage by the war.”
The Pontiff also recalled that “today in Italy marks the Day for Victims of Workplace Accidents.”
After greeting various groups of pilgrims, Pope Leo revealed that he will soon undergo surgery to remove a lung nodule.
