Former head of Vatican diplomatic personnel named apostolic nuncio to Ireland

October 08, 2026

Pope Leo XIV named Archbishop Jan Romeo Pawlowski, the current apostolic nuncio to Greece, as the new apostolic nuncio to Ireland.

Pope Francis raised Archbishop Pawlowski to prominence in 2017 when he created the third section of the Secretariat of State—the Section for Diplomatic Personnel of the Holy See—alongside the Section for General Affairs and the Section for Relations with States and International Organizations. Pope Francis named Archbishop Pawlowski the first head of the third section.

In September 2022, Pope Francis named a new Secretary of Pontifical Representations without giving Archbishop Pawlowski a new assignment. Nearly three months later, Pope Francis appointed Archbishop Pawlowski the apostolic nuncio to Greece.

Born in 1960 and ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Gniezno, Poland, in 1985, Pawlowski entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See and was appointed apostolic nuncio to the Republic of the Congo and to Gabon in 2009. In 2015, he became an official of the Secretariat of State.
