Pope Leo: Christians cannot accept a culture of waste
October 02, 2026
Pope Leo XIV told representatives of an Italian utility company that we are “witnessing the uncontrolled consumption of resources” and that “the management and disposal of enormous quantities of waste are becoming increasingly problematic.”
“Mindful of God’s commandment, as Christians we cannot resign ourselves to accepting a culture of waste,” Pope Leo said during his October 1 audience with a delegation from the Hera Group, which provides the Vatican with recycling services. “Rather, we are called to make wise use of creation.”
“As Pope Francis taught, the model of recycling and circular production represents a good way to ensure a sustainable environment for future generations,” he added.
