CWN Editor's Note: The Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments issued new decrees in 2025 permitting the celebration of Mass, according to the 1962 Missal, in parishes in 34 dioceses around the world.
Seven decrees were issued during Pope Francis’s reign; 27 were issued after Pope Leo’s election on May 8. Twenty-nine of the decrees extended permission for the celebration of the extraordinary form in parishes for two years. Some decrees permitted the extraordinary form in multiple parishes within a diocese.
The dicastery also issued 34 such decrees in 2024: five in January-April, eight in May-August, and 21 in September-December. In 2023, the dicastery issued 55 such decrees.
Pope Francis issued Traditionis Custodes, his apostolic letter restricting the celebration of the extraordinary form, in July 2021. The collection of the dicastery’s decrees posted on its website dates only to 2023.
