Pope Leo pays tribute to St. Gregory the Great

Pope Leo XIV paid tribute to Pope St. Gregory the Great, who reigned from 590 to 604.
“Tomorrow we will celebrate the memorial of Pope St. Gregory the Great, whose body rests in St. Peter’s Basilica,” Pope Leo said at the conclusion of his September 2 general audience. “He is called ‘the great’ for his exceptional activity as a pastor in very difficult times for society and the Church: a ‘greatness’ that drew strength and vigor from living faith in Christ.”
“May his example inspire in each one of you a renewed and intense trust in God, the source of grace and hope for the whole world,” the Pope added.
The Pope’s tribute to St. Gregory followed remarks to Polish pilgrims on religious instruction and the new school year:
The school year, which began yesterday, marks a further stage in the path of acquiring knowledge and educating the new generations, thanks to the collaboration between parents, school and the Church. Attendance at religion lessons and catechesis can broaden horizons, deepen knowledge of God and the world, and prepare one to receive the sacraments fruitfully and to participate in the life of the community. My blessing to you all!
The Vatican omitted the papal tribute to St. Gregory and words on the new school year from its English translation of the Pope’s remarks.
