Pope encourages faithful to cultivate a commitment to peace

August 20, 2026

Pope Leo XIV encouraged the faithful to cultivate a commitment to peace.

“My thoughts go out to young people, the sick, and newlyweds,” Pope Leo said at the conclusion of his August 19 general audience. “I would like to invite each of you always to develop within yourselves a genuine awareness of peace.”

“Have the sincere awareness that peace is a precious and great good, and that a strong and constant commitment is needed to realize it, by following with honesty and truth the paths that build and strengthen it in society,” the Pope added.

The Vatican omitted these words of the Pontiff from its English translation of his remarks.
