Pope prays for Colombian earthquake victims, sends alms
August 13, 2026
At his August 12 general audience, Pope Leo XIV offered prayers for the victims of the severe earthquake there.
“I wish to express my closeness to our Colombian brothers and sisters who suffered the effects of the recent earthquake, which caused numerous deaths and injuries, as well as extensive material damage,” Pope Leo said in Spanish. “As I pray to the Lord for the eternal rest of the deceased, I assure you of my prayers for their families and for all those affected by this tragedy. I express my gratitude to all those working in rescue and relief efforts for the victims.”
The Vatican omitted the Pontiff’s words from its English translation of his remarks.
The Pope, through the Dicastery for the Service of Charity, also sent €100,000 ($115,170) to Caritas Colombia for distribution to areas affected by the earthquake.
