Polish bishop resigns after sex scandal in diocese

October 24, 2023

CWN Editor's Note: Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Bishop Grzegorz Kaszak of Sosnowiec, Poland, whose diocese was stunned by a sex scandal.

A priest of the diocese was suspended in September after emergency medics were summoned to his parish, reportedly to revive a male prostitute who had been involved in an orgy there. While the diocese promised “to fully clarify the matter,” Bishop Kaszak came under fire for his handling of previous clerical scandals.

In his letter of resignation Bishop Kaszak—who is 59, and had led the Sosnowiec diocese since 2009—asked “everyone to forgive my human limitations.”
