CWN Editor's Note: Bishop Robert Byrne of Hexham and Newcastle, England, has resigned at the age of 68, explaining that “the office of the diocesan bishop has become too great a burden” for him.
Bishop Byrne, who took up his post in 2019, said that he came to the decision to step down after a long period of prayer and reflection, and thanked Pope Francis for accepting his early retirement.
