CWN Editor's Note: The Commission of Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) has joined with other groups in promoting a weekly day of rest for workers.

Father Manuel Barrios Prieto, the general secretary of COMECE, said that a common day of rest “enables people to spend time with their family and friends, to care for others, especially the most vulnerable, to play together with their children and friends, to enjoy contact with nature and to nourish their cultural and spiritual life and pursue other interests and hobbies.”

The statement from COMECE made no mention of God or worship.
