Filipino prelate scolds participants in unruly procession

January 11, 2010

Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales of Manila expressed dismay at the excessively emotional displays that occurred during an annual procession honoring the revered Black Nazarene icon. A stampede during the procession resulted in two deaths and 400 injuries. The archbishop said that true reverence would have led to a serene and reflective atmosphere rather than such an outburst. The procession drew a crowd estimated at 4 million.
