CWN Editor's Note: Born in 1928, ordained a priest of the Diocese of Fano (Italy) in 1952, and ordained to the episcopate in 1992 by Pope St. John Paul II, then-Bishop Sgreccia served as secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Family (1992-1996) and as the Pontifical Academy for Life’s vice president (1994-2005) and president (2005-2008). Pope Benedict XVI created him a cardinal in the consistory of 2010. Sgreccia wrote Manuale di bioetica [Manual of Bioethics], which has been translated into English as Personalist Bioethics: Foundations and Applications. With Cardinal Sgreccia’s death, there are 220 members of the College of Cardinals, 120 of whom are eligible to vote in a conclave.
