Church leaders call for ‘courageous leadership’ in Northern Ireland

May 14, 2019

Stressing a need to “restore the devolved institutions” of Northern Ireland, Church leaders have joined in a statement of support for political talks aimed at “the establishment of a sustainable power-sharing executive.”

Pointing to the daily costs of “not having a functioning devolved government,” and the loss of confidence particularly among the most vulnerable people, the Church leaders call for “courageous and compassionate leadership” to break a political impasse.

The statement is signed by the leaders of the Roman Catholic, Methodist, Church of Ireland (Anglican), and Presbyterian leaders of Ireland, and the president of the Irish Council of Churches.
