New Mexico diocese will confirm children along with First Communion

CWN Editor's Note: The Diocese of Gallup, New Mexico has announced a new policy that will have children receive the sacrament of Confirmation along with First Communion. Bishop James Wall said that the policy restores the ancient order of the sacraments of initiation.

    This is a huge mistake for the simple reason that a 7 year old is in no position to reaffirm those promises make on his behalf by his Godparents at Baptism. Nor is he educated in the faith the the extent that he can meet his proper obligations to the faith and church. No wonder that "fallen away Catholics" are so numerous. Our young people are grossly undereducated in the faith. Training for adulthood in the faith should be a major effort. Take a page from the bar-mitzvah in the Jewish tradition
