Pakistan: 80 Muslims arrested for attacks on Christians

August 10, 2009

Pakistani police have arrested 80 Muslims following the brutal August 1 attack that left ten Christians dead in the northeastern Pakistani city of Gojra. Speaking at the victims’ memorial Mass, Father Shafique Hadayat, the local parish priest, commended the government for its response.

An Anglican bishop who was present at the Mass observed, “While we believe those killed for their faith go to heaven, there are those who kill others for the promise of heaven. Only the Word of God can bring comfort to our heavy hearts.” Banners in the parish had phrases like “We salute the dignity of Christian martyrs” and “Martyrs’ blood is the seed of the Church.”
