Cardinal Margéot of Mauritius dead at 93

July 17, 2009

Cardinal Jean Margéot, the retired Bishop of Port Louis, Mauritius, has died at the age of 93. Ordained a priest of Port Louis in 1938, he was ordained as the bishop of that diocese in 1969, and remained at that post until his retirement in 1993. He was raised to the College of Cardinals by Pope John Paul II in 1988.

With the death of Cardinal Margéot, there are now 185 living members of the College of Cardinals, of whom 113 are under the age of 80 and thus eligible to vote in a papal conclave.
