Parishioner shot and killed during Mass in Cali, Colombia
November 28, 2016
A man was shot and killed during Mass in Cali, Colombia, last week.
Fernando Padilla was gunned down during a Mass at St. Cecilia church on November 22. The shooting sparked a panic in the church, which was crowded for the feast of the patron saint of the parish.
Archbishop Dario de Jesus Monsalve Mejia of Cali, who was present at the Mass, condemned the murder. “Unfortunately not even the fear of God stops the absolute disregard for human life that has roots in the soul of vast sectors of our Colombian society,” he said. Cali has been a center of drug trafficking, with rival gangs engaged in deadly competition for dominance.
Two other people were killed in the same parish church two years ago.
