Pope praises service of youthful volunteers

November 28, 2016

Pope Francis met on November 26 with 7,000 young people who have volunteered for a year with Italy’s National Civil Service.

Speaking in Paul VI Audience Hall, the Pope said that “the project of a united society is the goal of every civilized community that wants to be egalitarian and fraternal. It is betrayed every time we witness passively the increasing inequality between different social partners or between the nations of the world.”

Warning against oppression, indifference, and discrimination, the Pope told the youths that their volunteerism has “a prophetic function that shows how it is possible to think and act in a different manner.”

The path of service, he added, “releases in us a new energy … I invite you to walk this path of service and take Jesus as a perfect model of humanity.”
