El Salvador: archbishop wants action against gang violence
November 15, 2016
El Salvador’s leading Catholic prelate has challenged the country’s government to take effective action against violent criminal gangs.
Archbishop José Luis Escobar Alas of San Salvador said that the government’s security plan, El Salvador Seguro, “is not getting results.” He prodded government officials to “review that plans that are underway” and make appropriate changes.
The archbishop spoke out after the November 12 murder of a Salvadoran soldier. There have been 62 policemen and members of the military killed thus far this year, with the bloodshed attributed to criminal gangs.
