Pope celebrates memorial Mass for deceased prelates

November 04, 2016

Pope Francis celebrated Mass in St. Peter’s basilica on November 4 for the cardinals and bishops who have died during the past year.

“These our brothers have reached the goal, after having served the Church and loved the Lord Jesus,” the Pontiff said in his homily. He reminded the congregation in the Vatican basilica that death is “the entrance into the fulness of life.”

For all Christians, the Pope said, life is a journey “to the house of the Father.” The first key moment in that journey comes at Baptism. For the deceased bishops, the next major step is ordination, when “we are united in a special way to Christ, associated with his priestly ministry.”
