Profiles of new cardinals

October 11, 2016

The Catholic Herald of London has provided insights into the thoughts of the 13 new cardinal-electors appointed by Pope Francis. (Four of the 17 cardinals named by the Pope are over the age of 80 and cannot participate in a papal election.)

Noteworthy among the characteristics of the newly named cardinals are a commitment to dialogue (with other faiths and within the Church), a penchant for involvement in political affairs, and support for Pope Francis himself. Archbishop Carlos Osoro is known as “the Spanish Francis.” The Belgian Archbishop Jozef de Kezel is known as a protege of Cardinal Godfried Daneels, his predecessor as Archbishop of Brussels, who is a close collaborator of Pope Francis.
