September 26, 2016

The Vatican has released a statistical profile of the Catholic presence in Georgia and Azerbaijan in advance of the visit to those two countries by Pope Francis, which will take place September 30 to October 2.

Georgia's Catholic population is 112,000, accounting for 2.5% of the country's 4.5 million people. There are two bishops, 28 priests, 39 religious, and 14 seminarians. The Catholic Church operates three schools, nine clinics, one nursing home, and one orphanage.

In Azerbaijan there are only 570 Catholics: a tiny fraction of the overall 9.4 million population. There is just one parish and one other pastoral center, staffed by seven priests and ten religious. There is one Catholic secondary school and one nursing home.
