Regensburg address of Benedict XVI was prophetic: Cardinal Müller

September 19, 2016

Cardinal Gerhard Müller, the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, said that the Regensburg address of Pope Benedict XVI was "prophetic," in a speech to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the famous papal address.

Speaking at an event in Regensburg, the German cardinal said that the former Pontiff was right to challenge both the West and the Islamic world to recognize the role of reason in appraising statements of faith. Regarding the most controversial passage of the original address-- the challenge to Islam to reject violence-- Cardinal Müller agreed: "The political and religious authorities in Islamic countries must therefore find an answer at to how the so-called 'sword verses' of the Qu'ran can be reconciled with the basic right of freedom of religion."
