Philippine prelate: pray for end to extrajudicial killings

August 31, 2016

The president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines has called for prayer to end the rash of extrajudicial killings of suspected drug traffickers.

An estimated 2,000 such murders have taken place since President Rodrigo Duterte was elected earlier this year.

“The killings continue to rise,” said Archbishop Socrates Villegas of Lingayen-Dagupan. “The indifference to the violations of the commandments of God is spreading … We trust in the mercy of God to answer our prayers for healing.”
