Philippine bishops welcome peace deal between government, Maoists

August 30, 2016

Bishops in the Philippines have welcomed a peace agreement signed between the nation’s government and the National Democratic Front, a Maoist insurgency launched in 1969.

“I congratulate them for agreeing on a ceasefire,” said Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo, according to a report from the Philippine News Agency. “I hope this leads to trust that will bring about real peace.”
