Colombia’s bishops call for ‘serene reflection’ on peace agreement
August 26, 2016
The Colombian Episcopal Conference has issued a statement following the signing of a peace agreement between the nation’s government and FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) guerilla movement.
Over 175,000 civilians have died in the Colombian conflict, which began in 1964.
Receiving the agreement “with hope,” the bishops called for “serene reflection, in a climate of dialogue and respect” in the weeks leading up to an October 2 plebiscite, when voters will decide whether to approve the agreement.
The bishops also called upon the faithful to “intensify prayer for peace in our country.”
