Ayatollah welcomes papal remarks on Islam and violence
August 23, 2016
A leading Iranian religious figure welcomed Pope Francis’s recent comments in which he denied that Islam is tied to terrorist violence.
Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi, 89, said on August 21 that the Pope’s “wise and logical stance regarding Islam in disassociating the religion from the inhumane actions and atrocities of the Takfiri [apostate] groups such as Daesh [ISIS] is truly admirable.”
