Cardinal Marx under fire for handling of abuse charge

August 19, 2016

Cardinal Reinhard Marx of Munich, Germany, has come under fire for his handling of a sex-abuse case in the Trier diocese, which he led from 2001 to 2007.

Then-Bishop Marx reportedly allowed a priest to remain in active ministry although he was aware that police were investigating the priest on sex-abuse charges. The accused priest was finally suspended in 2015, after at least two more police investigations into charges against him.

Cardinal Marx has not commented on the complaints. A Munich archdiocesan official said that the cardinal's handling of the accused priest's case was in line with the guidelines then in force for the German bishops' conference. The case would be handled differently today, the official conceded.
