Australian Church leaders plan Synod for 2020

August 18, 2016

Catholic Church leaders in Australia are planning a nationwide Synod for 2020.

"We asked the Pope for his approval to celebrate a local assembly," reported Archbishop Mark Coleridge of Brisbane, a main proponent of the Synod. He observed that the national Synod would be an example of the synodal approach to Church leadership that the Pontiff has championed.

Archbishop Coleridge said that the Synod would discuss "profound cultural changes" that the Church must address. He said:

I think we have to accept the fact that Christianity-- in the sense of Christianity as the common religion, with a mass following-- is over.
