Annual seminar for former Ratzinger students scheduled for August 26-28

August 18, 2016

The "Ratzinger Schuelerkreis," the annual gathering of former students of Pope-emeritus Benedict XVI, will be held August 26- 28, at the papal summer residence in Castel Gandolfo.

Each year since 1977, when he was appointed Archbishop of Munich, the former Pontiff has invited his old students to gather for an informal seminar, dedicated to the discussion of a timely topic. The meetings continued when then-Cardinal Ratzinger moved to Rome to serve as prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and during his pontificate. Since his resignation, Benedict has not participated in the seminars, but has celebrated Mass for the participants.

The topic for this year's meeting will be the crisis of faith in Europe. Two speakers have been invited to address the group: Joseph Weiler, who as a lawyer has defended the display of crucifixes in Italian classrooms; and Bishop Egon Kapellari, the retired Bishop of Graz, Austria.
