Rome's homeless enjoy beach outings, pizza at Pope's expense

August 18, 2016

About 100 of Rome's homeless people have enjoyed trips to the beach as the guests of Pope Francis, the papal almoner has revealed.

Archbishop Konrad Krajewski disclosed that he has taken groups of about 10 people on day trips to the Italian coast. The archbishop drives the guests in a van, and provides each one with a bathing suit and towel. On the return trip they stop for pizza, again at the Pope's expense.

Archbishop Krajewski recognizes that these trips-- along with previous papal initiatives that include showers and haircuts for the homeless-- do not solve their long-term problems, "but at least we are restoring to them a little dignity."
