Peruvian bishops: faith is ‘most powerful force’ for changing society

August 05, 2016

In a message for the nation’s independence day, the president of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference lamented the “great evils” that loom over the nation: “insecurity, poverty, and corruption.”

“The gift of the Christian faith, rooted in our national identity, is the most powerful force that can drive change and transformation,” said Archbishop Salvador Piñeiro García Calderón of Ayacucho.

The prelate also stressed the importance of various values, including respect for life from conception to natural death; respect for the family, founded on the marriage of a man and a woman; and the care of creation.
