Bishops welcome World Youth Day to Panama-- Americas' oldest diocese

August 02, 2016

The Catholic bishops of Panama have welcomed the news that the next World Youth Day celebration will be held in 2019 in Panama City—reminding the world that this was the first diocese established in the Americas, in 1513.

Archbishop José Domingo Ulloa of Panama City said that the celebration will be a “balm for the youth of Central America.” He spoke about counteracting problems face by young people who “live in poverty which pushes them toward migration, drug peddling, and violence.”

Cardinal José Luis Lacunza of David said that Panama “is capable of organizing the next World Youth Day,” adding that it will be “a wake-up call for young Catholics in Panama and all over Latin America.”
