Argentine Catholics seek beatification for clerics killed by military regime

As Catholics in Argentina marked the 40th anniversary of the murder of five clerics, the Archbishop of Buenos Aires lent his support to calls for their recognition as martyrs.

"The blood of the martyrs is the seed for new Christians," said Cardinal Mario Poli, as he celebrated Mass on July 4 in memory of the three priests and two seminarians who were killed in 1976. Their killers have never been identified, but there is little doubt that they were acting at the behest of the country's military leaders, who had accused the priests of colluding with Marxists.
