Vatican continuing talks with SSPX

July 04, 2016

The Vatican remains actively involved in talks aimed at regularizing the status of the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX), the secretary of the Ecclesia Dei commission reports.

Last week Bishop Bernard Fellay, the leader of the traditionalist group, said that the SSPX is no longer focused on gaining canonical recognition, but gives its top priority to "the denunciation of errors" being made and/or encouraged by Church leaders including Pope Francis.

But Archbishop Guido Pozzo, who has represented the Vatican in talks with the SSPX, said that quiet negotiations are continuing. Archbishop Pozzo said that Bishop Fellay's latest public statement "does not say anything new" regarding the stand taken by the breakaway group. He added that canonical recognition would be "essential" to any move toward reconciliation of the SSPX.

The Vatican has taken the matter of the SSPX seriously since 1988 when the Ecclesia Dei Commission was created. Two orders of priests were established by St. JPII to help the SSPX return to full communion with the See of Peter: (1) the FSSP (Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter), and (2) the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. I have been a member of an FSSP parish since its founding in 1995. Last week I attended Masses offered by the Institute while out of town. We both are here to help.

It becomes increasingly clear that SSPX has no flexibility and will not be satisfied with anything less than Church repudiation of all of the decrees and constitutions of VC 2. This is a waste of time, a bit like trying to negotiate with the Old Catholics. Let's just pray for them and let the Holy Spirit work.

This pope wants "reconciliation" with everyone. With everyone, that is, except faithful Catholics, whom he calls - among other insults - "rigid," "pharisaical," and acting like "doctors of the law." With this in mind - and I hope I'm wrong - it's hard to see how the status of the SSPX can be "regularized" at any time before hell freezes over, or this pontificate ends.
