Theme announced for 103rd World Day of Migrants and Refugees

June 22, 2016

The Vatican has announced the theme for the 103rd World Day of Migrants and Refugees: "Minor migrants, vulnerable and voiceless."

The World Day of Migrants and Refugees will be observed on January 15, 2017. A statement by Pope Francis, on this year's theme for the observance, will be released.

In announcing the theme, the Pontifical Council for Migrants observes that migration today is a worldwide problem, affecting people on every continent. The children caught up in migration, the Counil notes, are "often invisible as they are without documents or unaccompanied."

The World Day of Migrants and Refugees was instituted by the Vatican in 1915, originally to raise awareness of Italian emigrants.
